Poison Garden and Treehouse Restaurant, Alnwick

Poison Garden
The plants here are deadly!
Can you imagine wandering around the garden with the kids, telling them that if they touch they really will suffer?

Profile Description

This really is my favourite QWerky place! By that I mean Alnwick Castle – it will feature in every QWerky category as it’s full to the brim of interesting and quirky things to do and see.

It’s long been recognised that we have some eccentric aristocrats (nearly typed AristoCATS – which I do love to watch, even at my age), but we really do have to lift our glasses to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland for all their work at Alnwick castle. Good job, your Graces! (I had to look up how to address a Duke and Duchess – it’s not the sort of thing I have had call to use before as I don’t move in that sort of circle.)

We have listed both the Poison Garden and the Treehouse but in truth this venue has so many QWerks I think I would be here forever enthusing about them.

Let me start by telling you about the Poison Garden, as that’s the one that caught my attention. Can you imagine wandering around the garden with the kids, telling them that if they touch they really will suffer? The plants here are deadly! Some plants even have to be grown under licence from the Home Office. Wow! The gardeners here wear gloves as the plants are so deadly. Looking at the website I was surprised to find out how many common plants that grow in our gardens can kill us. Pretty or pretty boring looking plants are killers.

Never mind the Venus Fly Trap, which would feature in comics of my youth as plants that ate people, I am very interested in the real world of Poisons that are found in my own garden.

Castor oil is a killer? Not quite, but I found it interesting that a single seed from the plant that they used to make castor oil can kill someone. To be fair I found out loads of interesting things like this but I think you should GO and find out for yourself.

The Tree House Restaurant is one of the most unusual restaurants in the world. It’s high in the tree tops with a roaring fire and the trees grow right up through the restaurant. The food is reported to be good too. I don’t think you should miss this venue. There are many other eateries here but why go for the normal places when this quirky venue will delight you? It looks QWerkmazing.
